I used to be that guy who constantly posted daily content, hoping someone would finally notice my work.
And that was totally wrong.
Then I changed my approach and my followers grew by 20–30%. That small tweak can help you grow and build real connections on X, Instagram, or any platform.
You’re right, consistency wins.
But here’s the catch: I’ve seen creators make one big mistake constantly promoting themselves online without engaging with others.
Austin Kleon, author of Show Your Work, calls this “Human Spam” people who only broadcast their work while ignoring the community around them.
Smart creators understand that listening and being a fan of others’ work is just as important as creating their own.
It’s better to have a few genuine, die-hard followers than thousands of passive ones.
Focus on building relationships based on shared curiosity and genuine interest.
Being curious, attentive, and helpful makes you someone worth following.
But here’s a key reminder ignore energy drainers.
Not everyone in your network contributes positively to your growth.
So how do you test it?
Before you start engaging everywhere, do the vampire test does this person or community energize or drain you? Only engage where you feel energized.
Engaging with people in your niche’s community is one of the best things you can do.
Join discussions, share ideas, and connect with people who understand your work.
Two of my friends started on X at the same time:
David 60 days, 500 followers, posting daily.
Result: 0 clients, barely any engagement.
James 60 days, 300 followers, posting daily.
Result: 4 clients, DMs every week.
What’s the difference?
David only posted his own content.
James spent 30 minutes daily commenting on others’ posts, DMing new followers, and joining conversations.
Same niche. Same posting frequency. Different strategy.
Consistency matters but only if you’re doing it in the right order.
If you want to stand out, do what most people aren’t doing.
Peers who share your passions are essential for growth.
Lesson?
Don’t just promote yourself.
Be an active, curious participant in your community.
Build genuine connections, surround yourself with positive people, and engage in meaningful conversations.
Do the test remove negative people and keep the positive ones.
The math is simple:
More genuine engagement = more trust = more clients.
